To Be Broken By You

“But David’s heart (conscience) troubled him after he had counted the people. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the sin of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” … Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hands of man.”” ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭24.10-14‬ ‭AMP‬‬

The pain of discipline is sweeter than the pain of regret. To be broken and chastised by the Lord is better than to be broken and chastised by the world. For His mercies are great, but the world… not so much.

It’s here that we find David lamenting over his pride and ego, and his decision to do things his own way on his own strength. Thankfully, he repents and turns back to God.

Whatever God gives us to carry, as a punishment or as a mission, we can look forward to it because it’s good for us. What doesn’t feel good is good for us when it’s from God.

David said, ‘let us fall into the hands [or the care of] the Lord.’ The Good News Translation (GNT) says it like this, “David answered, “I am in a desperate situation! But I don’t want to be punished by people. Let the Lord Himself be the one to punish us, for He is merciful.””

Thank God that we serve a just and merciful Savior who knows how to deal with us and knows what we need and when we need it. Knowing this should stir us to run towards God instead of running and hiding from Him.

He corrects those He loves (Proverbs 3.12) and we know that we’ll be better for it because we can trust that He wants what’s best for us.
